In the interest of science, I wondered “What would Snooki — break-out star of MTV’s Jersey Shore — look like with human skin?”
Humanity, I give you the answer.

There are a lot of incarnations of the Toronto Subway typeface floating around out there; some are alright but most are downright awful. I figured it wasn’t worth throwing my hat into the ring without adding some kind of “innovation,” so I created this rounded-serif version.

Toyota.ca is one of the top websites in Canada (okay, #943 according to Alexa, but when you work there you’d swear it was more like #630). The site is updated quarterly, so in most cases these stills are all that’s left of the pages I worked on.
For the keen-eyed, the main slide above shows French content that’s been dropped into an English template (for mock-up purposes).

This is an isometric technical drawing of a CF-104 Starfighter I drew in Adobe Illustrator, working from some rough blueprints I managed to locate online. Growing up we had the cockpit for one of these Read the rest of this entry »

I created these maps based on research done through Google Books, Google Scholar, and the JSTOR Online Academic Journal Database. Linguistic minorities are an interest of mine, and the Gaelic community in Nova Scotia and the Peninsular French community in Newfoundland are both in drastic decline. These maps were designed as open-source reference materials.

This is an experiment with Photoshop to create the illusion of a diorama from a real-world photograph. The edits are apparent when you view the original photograph here.

This is an object graphic I drew from a photo-reference in Illustrator. It was my first use of the gradient map tool, for an Information Design class.

I chose American author Jack Kerouac (1923–1969) for this project simply because there aren’t a lot of colour photographs of him around. The challenge was in adjusting the levels for the skin, T-shirt and background based on hue, bringing out the highlights in the hair, and achieving life-like tone in the skin.

This is a typeface I designed for Typography IV at school — the concept was a post-modern take on Janson. As one of the most popular publishing typefaces from the middle of the century, Janson was seen in all manner of publications, at many different levels of distress. This version is bleedy, worn-down, and on its last legs.

This is disc art + cover for a Lexus Canada dealer ISF promotional DVD. I also did the menu interface in DVD Studio Pro. I wanted the disc to feel like a slick racing video game.

I produced this in the summer of 2008, just before both of these phones were released in Canada. It was supposed to be a newspaper-flavoured portfolio piece, but in a Hail Mary Pass I e-mailed it to the Globe & Mail just to see what would happen. Mike Snider, the very polite Online Technology Editor, told me it was “a great idea and looks clean and professional,” but because of policy they were unable to accept an unsolicited submission.
